How is a Hair Test Collected?

A hair drug test is quite simple and requires only a small volume of hair (about 120 strands) from a specific area (usually the back of the crown) to be completed.

The hair is cut as close to the scalp as possible, then placed in a chemical solution to remove all external contaminants. It is then liquefied and tested for drugs.

How far back can a hair drug test detect?

In most cases, a head hair sample can detect drug use for up to 90 days after use (from 1.5 inches of head hair). Body hair can show drug use for up to one year. The detection window is much larger in hair drug testing because trace amounts of drug chemicals become trapped inside each hair. Like fingernail testing, hair follicles are composed of a hard protein called keratin, and they are tested using the same process as fingernails. Drugs are incorporated into the hair’s fibers from the bloodstream and remain locked in the hair as it grows.
